President Obama Extends Condolences in Afghan Landslide

Farshad Usyan/AFP/Getty Images(WASHINGTON) -- President Obama called Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Sunday, offering his condolences on the recent landslide incident in Badakhshan province.

In response, Karzai expressed appreciation for international assistance and described ongoing response from the Afghan government, including visits to the region by Afghan vice presidents.

Obama also offered additional U.S. assistance to the aid efforts, and "affirmed the support of the American people as the Afghans respond to this tragedy," according to a statement from the White House.

Local officials estimated a death toll of more than 2,000 people from the Friday incident, according to the New York Times.
