Protests in Egypt, Expected to Be Peaceful, Quickly Turn Violent

Stockbyte/Thinkstock(CAIRO) -- Thousands of protesters took to the streets in Egypt Friday as the heated protests demanding the end of President Mohamed Morsi's government continue.

In Cairo, a march to the presidential palace quickly turned violent when a group of about 100 young men hurled Molotov cocktails and rocks into the palace, setting some trees on fire.

Officials had expected Friday's demonstrations to be peaceful, given the political factions that came together Thursday to sign an agreement denouncing the violence.

The Interior Ministry deployed essential security forces to the scene and riot police moved in. After firing volleys of tear gas into the crowd, they successfully dispersed the crowd, pushing them away from palace.
