Rising Transit Costs Spark Protests in Brazil

AFP/Getty Images(SAO PAULO, Brazil) -- Hundreds of protestors set a bus on fire and attacked a station in the Brazilian city of Sao Paolo in a call for free public transportation on Friday.

The peaceful protest took a turn for the worse when demonstrators vandalized turnstiles, ATMS and ticket machines, according to the BBC.

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff announced a plan Friday, saying the city will receive federal funds for subway network expansion.

In protest, demonstrators marched through the city, eventually leading to the violent outbursts at the bus terminal.

A police colonel was struck by a rock and had to be rescued by fellow officers, Brazilian newspaper O Globo reports.

The city of Sao Paulo saw demonstrations in June after the implementation of high transport costs, spreading protests across Brazil.
