Russia and China Veto UN Syria Resolution

Louai Beshara/AFP/Getty Images(UNITED NATIONS) -- Russia and China vetoed on Saturday the resolution that calls for an immediate end to the violence in Syria.

Speaking forcefully into the microphone at the United Nations Security Council, United States Ambassador Susan Rice did not hold back in her criticism of the veto.

“The U.S. is disgusted” that a couple of members of this council continue to prevent us from fulfilling our sole purpose, she said.

French Ambassador Gerard Araud also expressed his negative thoughts on the veto.

“This is a sad day for the UN Security Council,” he said, adding that it was a “sad day for democracy and a sad day for Syrians.”

Meanwhile the death toll in an assault on Homs reached its highest point in the past 11 months as 217 people were killed between 9 p.m. and 1:30 a.m. Friday night, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
