Russian Lawmakers to Consider 'Gay Propaganda' Law

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(MOSCOW) -- Russia is considering a national law that would ban even discussing homosexuality around children. On Friday, members of parliament will review the new legislation.

The law, which supporters call a ban on "gay propaganda" that the Financial Times reports would include gay pride parades and distribution of pamphlets supporting gay rights, is similar to measures enacted by St. Petersburg and other regions over the past year.

Pop singer Madonna was nearly fined under the St. Petersburg law after she spoke out against it from the stage. The charges were eventually dropped.

Recent protests against the proposed national law have been met by violence.
