Shots Fired at Police as Clashes Break Out in North Belfast

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- The Police Service of Northern Ireland say shots were fired at officers Thursday after clashes broke out following a Protestant parade in the Catholic Ardoyne area of north Belfast, the BBC reports.

No one was injured, but nine police officers were treated during the incident. Both nationalists and loyalists threw petrol bombs and bricks at the police, who responded by using water cannons to contain the crowds. Six plastic bullets were fired, says the BBC.

Officers continue to deal with "significant disorder" in north Belfast.
