Strong Earthquake Strikes Off Japan's East Coast

Photodisc/Thinkstock(WASHINGTON) -- A 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck off Japan's eastern coast early Saturday morning, local time, near the epicenter of the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

The tremor prompted a local tsunami alert that was later lifted.

The epicenter of the quake, which struck around 2 a.m. local time, was about 230 miles off the east coast of Japan.

Workers at Japan’s crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant were ordered to evacuate, but there was no immediate word of irregularities reported there.

There were no immediate reports of damage.
