Syria Peace Talks Grinding to a Halt?

creisinger/Thinkstock(GENEVA) -- There was no progress Tuesday in Geneva between the Syrian government and opposition forces trying to find a resolution that would halt the three-year-long civil war.

As it happened, United Nations special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi decided to end things early as the two sides failed again to reach any common ground on the make-up of a transitional government that Bashar al-Assad's opponents say must not include the president.

Meanwhile, convoys to bring much-needed assistance to the residents of the battle-scarred city Homs are still on hold because Damascus is alleging that the U.S. might try to sneak in military support to rebel forces.

The Syrian government delegation reacted angrily to reports that Washington is resuming non-lethal aid to opposition fighters elsewhere in Syria after a one month hiatus.

Brahimi remains cautiously optimistic that the two sides can come to some kind of understanding on at least minor points.  He says they've agreed to talk through Friday.
