Syrian Military Stepping Up Bombardment of Damascus Neighborhoods?

JOSEPH EID/AFP/Getty Images(DAMASCUS, Syria) -- As casualties in Syria's capital continue to mount, activists seeking the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad said on Monday that the government is now waging unprecedented attacks on sections of Damascus believed to be in rebel control.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claimed that Syrian war jets targeted a building in the restive neighborhood of Moadamiyeh, killing at least 13 people with others still trapped beneath the rubble.

Activists maintain that eight of the victims were children as the Syrian government has ramped up the use of warplanes and rocket launchers to try and weaken opposition forces.

Meanwhile, Syria's official news agency SANA denied that the bombardment in the Damascus suburb was the result of government war planes, alleging that rebel forces caused the destruction.

Dozens of people were reported killed in Damascus on Monday, with the overall death toll in the nearly two-year war easily exceeding 60,000 victims.
