(CAIRO) -- Egyptian authorities closed the Great Pyramid of Giza on Friday following rumors that groups would conduct spiritual ceremonies at 11:11 a.m. on 11/11/11.
According to BBC News, the Great Pyramid which houses the Pharaoh Khufu was closed until Saturday and Egyptian authorities say the closure was for maintenance.
Several online postings fuelled the rumors with information on some groups' intention to hold ceremonies in the pyramid including Masonic and Jewish rituals.
Numerologists view the date as significant and people still gathered near the closed pyramid. The Sphinx and other pyramids were open to tourists. Security was increased at the tourist site on Friday
