Daniel Berehulak/Getty Images(TRIPOLI) -- Libyan rebels have firm control over the capital city and with their arrival the full horrors of the months' long war is becoming clearer.

BBC reports that one of its correspondents discovered hundreds of decomposing bodies at an Abu Salim hospital which was abandoned by fleeing physicians and nurses during the fighting.

The over 200 dead patients were both civilians and fighters left in the hospital for about a week. At least 17 patients were rescued alive from the hospital by the International Red Cross. It is unclear how the majority of patients died.

Amnesty International reported that atrocities had been committed by both the rebels and forces loyal to Col. Moammar Gadhafi. The human rights group found that rebels beat and punched pro-Gadhafi forces and executed others who had already surrendered. Some of the captured mercenaries were identified as nationals of Chad, Niger and Sudan.

Eyewitness accounts given to the group, reported that pro-Gadhafi forces raped male detainees at the Abu Salim Prison.
