Dozens of Children Killed After Train Collides with School Bus in Egypt

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(CAIRO) -- Egyptian authorities say that barriers were not down at the site where a train collided with a school bus on its way to kindergarten class last Saturday.

Fifty-one people, nearly all of them children, were killed in the accident, while 17 others were injured.

The collision occurred in the province of Assiut about 200 miles south of Cairo.

Witnesses said that the bus was dragged for about half-a-mile with wreckage of the vehicle found beneath the train and children’s shoes and book bags scattered around the area.

Most of the dead were between the ages of 4 and 6.  Three adults also died in the crash.

In addition to police investigating the worker who was on duty at the train crossing, the accident has also cost the jobs of Transportation Minister Mohammed Rashad al-Metainy and the head of the local railroad agency.

China: Bus Plunges Into Ravine, 17 Killed

Ryan McVay/Thinkstock(NINGDE, China) -- Seventeen people were killed and three were seriously injured when a long-distance bus plunged into a deep ravine Wednesday morning.

China’s Xinhua News Agency reported 45 people were on the bus, which was headed from eastern Jiangsu province to the coastal city of Xiamen in Fujian province, when it overturned in Fujian's Ningde city.

Roads in China are notoriously dangerous. Back in February, 15 people were killed when a bus crashed into a ravine in northern Shanxi province.

Swiss Bus Crash Kills 28

SEBASTIEN FEVAL/AFP/Getty Images(SIERRE, Switzerland) -- Families are grieving after a bus crash in Switzerland killed more than two dozen people, including at least 22 children, Tuesday night.

Twenty-eight people were reportedly killed when their bus hit the wall of a tunnel near a major ski resort in the Swiss Alps. The children, all 12 years old, were returning home from a ski trip.

It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the crash.
