Joint Audit Shows Civilian Surge Cost More Than $2 Billion Dollars

Jupiterimages/Thinkstock(WASHINGTON) - A new joint audit by the State Department Inspector General and the Special IG for Afghanistan Reconstruction concluded that the civilian surge has cost over $2 billion dollars.

This report notes that the civilian surge has nearly tripled the number of diplomats and other civilian experts from 320 in early 2009 to 1,040 by June. It also found that sending one civilian employee to Afghanistan for one year cost taxpayers between $410,000 and $570,000 dollars, excluding increased support and security expenses.

The audit also warns that costs could increase as the State Dept. and other civilian agencies may take on an expanded role when the military begins to withdraw next year.

Unfortunately it has also found that there were inadequate measures taken to actually ensure that the money was going to its intended purpose.
