Former Israeli PM Acquitted of Major Corruption Charges

Uriel Sinai/Getty Images(JERUSALEM) -- In one of the biggest corruption cases in Israeli history, Ehud Olmert, the country's former prime minister, was found guilty on Tuesday of breach of trust, but acquitted of two far bigger corruption charges.

Olmert was convicted of breach of trust when, as a minister, he granted business favors to a friend.  He was found not guilty of double charging charities for travel and using the leftover money for personal reasons, and of taking bribes from an American businessman.

The single conviction is seen as a victory for Olmert.  A sentence will be handed down later.

Israel's Foreign Minister to Face Corruption Charges

Comstock/Thinkstock(JERUSALEM) -- Israel's justice system recently convicted the country's former president, Moshe Katsav, on rape charges.  Israel's former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is still being investigated on a number of corruption charges and now it looks like the current foreign minister, Avigdor Leiberman, will be the next one to stand trial.

Israel's attorney general says he plans to indict Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman on charges of money laundering, aggravated fraud, and breach of trust. The move comes after more than 10 years of investigating Leiberman for allegedly taking millions of dollars he laundered through shell companies.  Leiberman denies the charges.

The official indictment is expected to be filed next month after a judicial hearing.  Formal charges will force the foreign minister to resign and because he is the head of the 2nd biggest party in the ruling coalition, it may also destabilize Prime Minister Netanyahu's government.
