Inquest Rules Australian Woman's Baby Was Stolen by Dingo

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(SYDNEY) -- "Maybe the dingo ate your baby" is one of the more famous lines delivered by Julia Louis-Dreyfus' character Elaine in the sitcom Seinfeld, referencing the 1988 movie A Cry in the Dark.

It turned out the movie was based on a real-life case in Australia of Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton, whose 9-month-old daughter was snatched from a campsite in the outback by a dingo in 1980.

In spite of an inquest agreeing with the couple's account, suspicion immediately fell on Chamberlain-Creighton and her now ex-husband, Michael Chamberlain, that they were trying to cover up a murder.

Chamberlain-Creighton was later convicted of killing her daughter, Azaria, and Chamberlain was found guilty of being an accessory, but the verdicts were eventually overturned.

While people still had their doubts about the couple's story, the results of a fourth coroner's inquest revealed Tuesday concluded that the baby was indeed taken by a wild dog.  The ruling was bolstered by three fatal attacks on children since Azaria was taken from the campsite.
