(NEW YORK) -- A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck off Mexico's Baja California on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. Initial reports put the magnitude at 6.6.
The quake was centered in the Gulf of California, 65 miles south of Los Mochis in the state of Sinaloa on the mainland.
The quake did not trigger a tsunami but could cause local waves, according to the Pacific Tsunami center. There were no initial reports of major damage.
