More than a Dozen Killed in Hot Air Balloon Crash in Egypt

STR/AFP/Getty Images(CAIRO) -- More than a dozen tourists are dead after a hot air balloon caught fire and crashed in Luxor, Egypt on Tuesday.

The balloon is said to have been about 1,000 feet in the air when the explosion occurred.

"I heard a loud explosion and then I saw some smoke," said Christopher Michel, who was on another balloon in the area when the accident happened.

Cherry Tohamy, who was on a balloon owned by the same company, said she heard a "very strong explosion" and "saw the fire coming out from the land somewhere.  It was like one kilometer or one and a half kilometers away from us."

Three people were also injured in Tuesday's crash.  None of the victims are American, the U.S. embassy in Cairo confirmed.

According to the BBC, the balloon's operating company said the crash was caused by a gas cylinder that exploded on board.

Australian Completes Treadmill Half Marathon -- On a Hot Air Balloon

Zoonar/Thinkstock(CANBERRA, Australia) -- Most people would feel plenty accomplished if they could finish a half-marathon, and even more so if they trekked the 13 miles for charity. But that's child's play for Aussie Rob Ginnivan.

On Thursday, Ginnivan finished a half marathon while on board a treadmill -- which had been loaded onto a hot air balloon.

Ginnivan told the U.K. Telegraph it took him longer than he thought. "What I didn't count on was that the basket actually tilted, so it was like running up a hill. Every time I took a step the basket would sway from left to right so I kind of had this sea type motion being in the air. It was quite bizarre and made it very difficult."

Ginnivan is hoping the stunt will help him raise around $70,000 for a heart foundation.

File photo. (Marty Melville/Getty Images)(CARTERTON, New Zealand) -- All eleven people onboard a hot air balloon were reportedly killed when it crashed outside a fairground near Carterton, New Zealand, early Saturday morning, local time.

A witness said he saw flames coming from the basket as the balloon plummeted to the ground. "It came down like a bloody rocket and then there was a big bang,'' said David McKinlay, according to the New Zealand Herald.

It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the fire and subsequent crash.
