US Repositions Troops in Afghan Valley

Photo Courtesy - ABC News(KABUL) -- The U.S. military is moving troops out of the Pech Valley in the Kunar Province of Afghanistan.

The Pech Valley, located in eastern Afghanistan, not far from the Pakistan border, is considered one of the most malignant areas in the region. The New York Times reports that at least 103 soldiers have been killed in the area, where Taliban and al Qaeda forces are entrenched.

The strategic shift shows a major change in the American military's approach to the campaign. The Pech Valley now joins other abandoned regions, including the Nuristan Province, the Waygul Valley and the Korangal Valley. The move has sparked comparison with the Soviet withdrawal from the same area in 1988.
