(TEHRAN, Iran) -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced Monday he has fired his foreign minister and replaced him with the country's nuclear chief, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency.
In a brief statement on President Ahmadinejad's website, he thanked Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki for his five years of service but offered no explanation for his decision.
Over the past year, Iranian lawmakers have been pushing for Mottaki's dismissal behind the scenes, with some saying he just wasn't a strong enough player on the international stage.
Iranian nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi will step in to fill in for Mottaki.
