Leak Found on North Sea Oil Platform

Digital Vision/Thinkstock(ABERDEEN, Scotland) -- A leak has been found on a North Sea oil platform, announced oil giant Royal Dutch Shell Saturday.

BBC News reports that the leak was discovered on the Gannet Alpha platform, located 113 miles from Aberdeen, Scotland.

A clean-up vessel has been sent to the location and the company confirmed there is a plane monitoring the surface for oil contamination.

Although Shell announced there was a "finite amount of oil that can be dispersed,” regulators are taking the leak seriously, according to the U.K.’s Department of Energy and Climate Change.

The Gannet oil field—co-owned by Esso, a subsidiary of U.S. oil firm Exxo—reported producing an estimated 13,500 barrels of oil per day between January and April this year.
