(KABUL, Afghanistan) -- A man wearing an Afghan police uniform opened fire in a joint NATO-Afghan base in northwest Afghanistan Monday morning, killing two NATO service members before fleeing the base, according to the NATO-led coalition.
A senior Afghan police official says the two service members were U.S. soldiers. NATO is not confirming that because next of kin have not yet been identified.
It’s not clear whether the shooter was an insurgent who had stolen a police uniform or was a disgruntled officer who decided to turn his gun on the Americans.
While exceedingly rare, Afghans in local army or police uniforms have killed foreign troops about a dozen times before. Last December, in the deadliest example, six Americans were killed by an Afghan border police officer in eastern Afghanistan.
