Deadly Flooding Forces Hundreds to Evacuate in Spain

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(ANDALUCIA, Spain) -- Drenching rainfall and devastating flooding in southern Spain have killed at least ten people and forced hundreds to evacuate their homes.

Floodwaters rose several feet in Andalucia, completely inundating streets and soaking the first floors of many homes with filthy water. Now declared a red alert by the government, at least 600 people in that region had to leave their homes behind for higher ground.

In nearby Murcia, torrential rain caused a highway bridge to collapse, and open fields turned into lakes in a short period of time. Adding to the misery, 35 people were injured at a fair in the region of Valencia when a tornado swept through a fairground and knocked down a Ferris wheel.

Deadly Tornado Rips Through New Zealand

John Foxx/Stockbyte/Thinkstock(AUCKLAND, New Zealand) -- A tornado ripped through New Zealand Tuesday afternoon, leaving at least one person dead and several more injured, according to local officials.

The twister hit Auckland around 3 p.m. local time, hitting speeds over 120 mph and leaving a near three mile-long trail of debris.  Cars were overturned, trees were uprooted and roofs were torn off of buildings, including that of a shopping mall in Albany.

The death toll was previously set at two, but authorities later revised the total to one.

"Initial reports that there were two or three dead are incorrect and we can only confirm one death at the moment.  We believe that to be accurate," local police commander Gary Davey said, according to the BBC.

Several reports say over a dozen people have been injured, although an exact figure has not yet been confirmed.
