Taliban Determined to Disrupt Elections in Afghanistan

daboost/Thinkstock(KABUL, Afghanistan) -- As Afghans prepare to go to the polls on Saturday for the first nationwide election in five years, the Taliban has stepped up violence to discourage voters.

A police official from a northern province says that a provincial council candidate and some of his supporters who were kidnapped last Sunday have been murdered by the Taliban.

The group has promised to continue a campaign of violence to disrupt the election to pick a successor to outgoing President Hamid Karzai. Abdullah Abdullah, Ashraf Ghani and Zalmai Rassoul lead a field of 11 presidential candidates.

Despite the Taliban's threats, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Wednesday that Afghan security forces have done a good job in repelling the Taliban, claiming that attacks are now at a two-year low.

He also praised the people of Afghanistan for resisting intimidation attempts by the Taliban to keep them away from the polls.
