UN Cancels Iran Invitation to Syria Peace Talks

iStock/Thinkstock(TEHRAN, Iran) -- The United Nations on Monday cancelled its invitation to Iran to attend Syria peace talks.

The talks aim to end the nearly three-year-old civil war in the country. Iran is a Syrian ally, but officials say the country did not accept the preconditions discussed in a previous conference.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said there was "deep disappointment" that Iranian public statements were inconsistent with oral assurances he was given. He extended an invite to Iran just one day prior to cancelling.

Senior Iranian officials reportedly told Ban that the country supported the goals of the conference. After the invitation was rescinded, the Syrian political opposition said it would attend the meeting, set for Wednesday in Switzerland.

"The Syrian Coalition welcomes the decision of the United Nations Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-Moon to withdraw the invitation set to Iran, given that Iran has not met the conditions of participation in Geneva 2 conference," the group said.

The end result of the conference is directed at establishing a transitional government and free elections in settling the end of a war that has killed more than 100,000 people.
