(WASHINGTON) -- The U.S. Department of State evacuated most of its remaining personnel in South Sudan Friday morning in response to the "deteriorating security situation" in the region.
Personnel were transported from Juba Airport to Uganda.
As a result of the continued drawdown, the U.S. embassy in South Sudan will no longer be able to provide any consular services to U.S. citizens there starting Jan. 4, the Department of State said in an emergency message.
The agency further advised U.S. citizens to avoid traveling to the country and recommended those currently in South Sudan to leave immediately.
