Voting Begins to Elect New President in Ukraine

Photo by Brendan Hoffman/Getty Images(KIEV, Ukraine) -- Citizens in Ukraine are going to the polls on Sunday to elect a new president, three months after the former leader Viktor Yanukovych was ousted during a period of violent protests.

Eighteen candidates are on the ballot, BBC News reports, in an election that is considered crucial to the nation's future. Confectionary tycoon Petro Poroshenko, known as the "chocolate king," is considered the favorite to win.

Polling in eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk was disrupted by pro-Russian separatists. No polling stations were open in Donetsk city, and nearly half of the district electoral commissions were not operational, BBC News says.
